The visitors to Fortress Headlands today were Bowden, a good side with some big ball carriers in the midfield who like to play expansive rugby and run the ball out wide. Spitfires made a slow start to the match, at times a bit caught in the headlights of the Bowden offensive play and scrambling to regain the upper hand and go on the attack, before the visitors went over for a brace of tries to take the early lead. Spitfires seem to do well when their backs are against the wall and soon they started to play some nice rugby, winning good turnover and taking the penalties given by Bowdens ever-off-side back line.
To be fair, there was little between these two sides with mistakes made from both. Unfortunately, it was Bowden who capitalised on these mistakes and turned them into points on the board. Spitfires played most of the rugby and recycled well from the breakdown, but frustratingly never use the full back-line, getting caught in midfield and having to work hard to retain possession. Sometimes they seemed to lack a little pitch awareness with the ball going the wrong way when there was a player lap-over on the blind-side, little things that if they are addressed by the team can make play so much easier for them and turn a loss to a win.
All said and done, every player put in a good shift and showed real thirst for the win and once again played for each other , as a team very well.
A great effort from all the lads nonetheless who showed great spirit in the dying moments to go over for the try
Well played lads!
Sometimes to win a match, you have to learn not to lose it first.
