Spitfires take the draw

Our guests today at a blustery Fortress Headlands were Winnington Park, a well-disciplined and strong side who ran and carried the ball well to take the early score. Winnington were strong at the set piece, pushing Spitfires off the ball in contested scrums and equally strong at the breakdown pushing spitfires off the ball. By the third quarter Spitfires were 4-2 down, both of their scores coming from some strong line breaks and good support play to go over.
Clearly however, Winnington had come for the win having lost at home to Spitfires earlier in the season and they played some well drilled rugby, keen to run the ball with some big mid field units and for a while Spitfires heads seemed to drop a little. One area in which this young side thrive however is their resilience and desire for the win and despite a hard-fought, physical match, Spitfires were able to pull back and take the draw at the final whistle.
Whilst at time Spitfires were slow to the breakdown and stood off the contact individually there was some great performances from the lads showing real flare, ability, field awareness and support play, and they worked hard as a team to reign Winnington back in and end with a well-deserved draw.
Well played to all of the lads on a good team performance. It is very reassuring and satisfying to see the desire this young team has and how they clearly play for each other.
