Stockport forwards Paul Millea and Chris Roddy have said they are leaving a ‘fantastic’ club behind them as both are set for a move away this summer.

Millea is likely to be moving on for the 2015/16 season whilst Roddy is continuing to apply his trade in tier four of English rugby as he has been signed by Stourbridge.

The pair have been excellent servants to Stockport for many years, but know even though it is the right time for them to move their careers on, they will always have fond memories at Stockport.

Millea said: I’ve loved playing at Stockport. It’s a fantastic club.

“Three seasons ago I was contemplating giving up rugby until Beefy (Tim Burgeon) phoned me and persuaded me to give it another go.

“The first year in National 2 North was an enjoyable but difficult one but a personal highlight that year was being asked to Captain the team for a number of games whilst Fuller was injured.

“A more successful year followed with winning promotion in the play-off and I was proud to represent the club in playing for Cheshire in the county championship that year.

“I did have options elsewhere but I felt that I needed to stay to try and help the club stay up in N2N this year I’m disappointed it didn’t happen.

“I was personally happy to sign off with a score on Saturday and 6 for the season and I hope I can kick on and have a big year next year.

Roddy added: I was always going to stay for this season as I really enjoyed my time at Port. It is a fantastic club and will always be a very special place for me.

“It is run by fantastic people and I have made some friends for life there but I think that the opportunity offered to me was too good to turn down at this time in my career.”

Both Millea and Vice-captain Roddy played integral parts in Stockport’s promotion back to National Two North last season with the players touching on that as a highlight of their Port careers.

However, this season has been incredibly tough for Stockport who have had a huge amount of injuries and have competed against sides which are in a much stronger financial position.

Port ended the season bottom of National Two North and were relegated back to National Three, but despite this disappointment, Millea and Roddy believe it’s only a matter of time before Stockport will return.

“It has been tough, said Roddy. “It always is when you are being beaten week in week out but I think it is a great character building experience for all involved.

"Financial power and injuries are definitely huge factors but sheer size and physical difference swung a lot of games in our opponents favour.

Millea added: "Its not an easy league N3N, but the young lads that have come through this year are coming off the back of a tough season and will have picked up an enormous amount of experience from that.

"I wish them all the best for next season and don’t think it will be too long before ‘Port are back at level 4, hopefully to stay!”
