Hibbs: 'We can bounce straight back'

Kieran Hibbs believes it is vital for Stockport’s 1st XV to stick to their principles if they are going to make a return straight back to National Two

Given that Port suffered a tough season in the fourth tier of English rugby last campaign, it is refreshing to hear this confidence from the team’s new captain for next season.

But that belief is what Hibbs and a number of other players in the squad talked about last season and it is evident the whole team wants to put things right when the new campaign begins in just over 11 weeks’ time.

“We are confident in the way we play our rugby,” the 26-year-old explained.

“Sticking to the principles we worked on last year will be key.

“I fully expect us to come out firing on all cylinders come next season. Straight off, the target is to bounce straight back up to National Two.

“We certainly won’t be taking National Three lightly though. There are some very competitive teams as we know from previous seasons at this level.

“But, we will be going into this next season full of confidence.”

After being part of Stockport for 13 years, Hibbs has now been given the opportunity to captain the 1st XV for next season as he undertakes a new chapter at Headlands Road.

Throughout his career, Hibbs has always been a big character for Stockport and judging by last season – he gives 100 per cent every time he pulls on the shirt.

“Obviously it’s an absolute shame the way it’s come to be, with Bunny [Mark Edwards] having to stop playing because of his knee injury,” says Hibbs.

“I’m sure he would have done a top job in the role. Having said that, personally it’s an absolute honour to lead the club, and it’s really a feeling of nervous excitement.

“It’s a club I’ve been with since I was 13 with the exception of one season away while at university.

“I’m so proud to be able to lead a great set of lads at a club I have such a connection with.”

Hibbs will skipper the side with Simon Green next season and Stockport’s season preparations are now just around the corner.

Port’s first game of the 2015/16 campaign is at Headlands Road on September 5th against Birkenhead Park.
