With the two local sides meeting at first team level for the first time it was the visitors, Burnage, who made the biggest impression in the first half, scoring three tries and a penalty to a penalty by Stockport to have a 22-3 lead at half time. However Stockport came back into the game and with a try and some excellent kicking by Josh Longmore got back on equal terms to finish with a 22-22 draw.
Despite having the wind in their favour during the first half it was the power of the Burnage pack that gave them a significant advantage. After an early exchange of penalties, and a harsh sin binning for Stockport lock Mike Waddington, the Burnage pack took control and driving from a lineout on the Stockport 22 the second row got the touch down and fly half Ross Whinney converted on 15 minutes. Soon after, a penalty gave Burnage an attacking lineout and again the drive took them over, with ex Stockport flanker John Wilson getting the try, which was duly converted for a 17-3 lead for the visitors. Just before the break the Burnage scrum camped on the Stockport 5 metre line and a series of penalties as the Stockport pack came under real pressure resulted in prop Elliot Millar-Mills being sin binned. After the fourth scrum Burnage scored with the scrum half darting through a gap to score, there was no conversion and half time brought relief for Stockport.
Coming out for the second half with a very strong wind in their favour Stockport got an early score, with skipper Greg Newton kicking through for wing Myles Hall to chase, Hall did enough to put off the defender and Newton was able to collect the ball and score, Longmore converted for 22-10 and the Stockport supporters had hope of a revival. Stockport were able to keep on the pressure, with the pack holding their own now and Longmore added two more penalties, the second from almost half way after the Burnage No 13 was carded for a tip tackle. It was Longmore who completed the scoring with another penalty and a drop goal to bring the sides level. The drop goal came after a good attack by Stockport to set up the position on 75 minutes. Burnage were not finished and spent the remainder of the game in the Stockport half, narrowly missing a drop goal with the final kick of the game.
