It is often said that ‘..forwards determine who wins a match, and the backs decide by how many points..’ So it was from the kick off, that it was clear Stockport had intentions to win the match with confident running by the backs, ably supported by strong ball retention by the forwards. The first 15 minutes saw both teams trading tries, but for the following 50 minutes there was only one team capable of adding to the score-sheet. 66 minutes into play the consistent power and running talents of Stockport proved that they could boast a point per minute, and at 66-7 they would be forgiven for coasting a little. Westoe were taking a hiding, but were unbowed, refusing to lie down. A flurry of rolling subs from Stockport, left them a scrum-half short when bright new star Batterbury hobbled off with a hamstring injury, and Mark Edwards filled the gap from his full back position. These final 10 minutes worked in Westoe’s favour, scoring three creditable and unanswered tries right to the final whistle, and the game concluded at 66-26.
Referee, Mr. Charles Erasmus had a sound match, and was required to settle a debate between Stockport’s Hall and Westoe’s Faatau, brandishing yellow cards to both players. The remainder of the match progressed without serious incident, with players focussing on their play, rather than their differences of opinions.
The crowd was entertained to a fine display of rugby from Stockport, being justifiably satisfied with a good day’s work. Westoe can proudly claim a bonus point from their hard fought battle, far from home.
