Top of the table Stockport hosted bottom of the table West Park but the home side found this a tough fixture for much of the game, with West Park playing with a determination that denied their league position. After a promising start with an excellent converted try in the first minute Stockport looked like they would run out easy winners but just after half time West Park drew level at 17-17, having led 10-7 after 20 minutes. However in the end Stockport confirmed their status with another try bonus point to seal a 34-17 victory.
The first score came within a minute as Stockport moved the ball right from the kick off. Newton made ground into the visitors 22 and with Cooper providing the link centre Anthony scored his first try for the club. Bebbington was on form with his kicking again and slotted the first of his 5 successful kicks at goal. West Park responded with a penalty and put pressure on Stockport, running the ball at every opportunity and a drive from their forwards gave them a converted try to go ahead at 10-7. Stockport needed to make two early substitutions with the injured Cruse and Blackham being replaced by Hopkins and Haidenger. While Fuller was in the sin bin the Stockport forwards were well organised and drove over from a lineout, Harvey getting the touchdown. Bebbington added the points and kicked a penalty to make it 17-10 at half time.
Stockport were held up over the line just after the break but West Park looked threatening again and took a quick penalty when Stockport were offside and drove over to make it 17-17 with the conversion points. Stockport then gained the upper hand with Bebbington adding a penalty and a conversion after Marwick twisted over for a try after a good drive. A good break from his own half by Anthony gave Drew a run for the line but he was tackled just short and his pass did not go to hand. Pearson moved up to fly half and his half break made space for wing Wellock to run in to the Park 22, the ball was recycled and Anthony got his second try of the match, Pearson added the conversion to make it 34-17. Stockport remain top of the table with 79 points to Morley’s 74.
