In the final match of their league season Stockport entertained Penrith, only needing a bonus point to secure a place in the playoffs for a promotion place. In the end they defeated their rivals for that place with a comprehensive 9 try 60 points to 3 victory.
After a nervy first 10 minutes as Penrith put on the pressure and went 3 points up from a penalty it was the most complete performance of the season, with the forwards taking control and the backs at last demonstrating their attacking potential with some powerful running from centres Anthony and Cooper and the others all contributing positively. There was a dominant performance by the fowards with skipper Marwick and man of the match Dave Hopkins just standing out in a great display by every member of the pack. There were few errors and lots of good support resulting in the continuity that led to the 9 tries. But there was also great defence with Penrith not being allowed a single try. The first try was a trademark drive from a lineout with Harvey getting the touchdown, the second followed immediately as Fuller ran the kick off back into the Penrith half, Ralph took it on and the recycled ball provided a try for Newton. Another drive from a lineout gave Harvey his second before Hopkins ran through the whole Penrith pack to set up a try for Anthony. With Bebbington converting 3 out of 4 it was 26-3 at half time and the crucial bonus point had been secured.
Another powerful run by Hopkins set up a try for Pearson, who got a second after a great beak by Anthony and the scene was set for a big victory at 38-3. The forwards gave Marwick a try with another good drive from a lineout, Rimmer picked up a loose ball 10 metres out and dummied through for his first try of the season and Wellock completed the try scoring, running in from 40 metres after Pearson had kicked a penalty.
The promotion playoff will be at Headlands Road against Hinkley or Luctonians from the Midlands Division on 1st May or 8th May, kick off at 3pm.
