With Matt Bebbington getting 100% with his seven kicks at goal Stockport secured a win at Sheffield to remain top of the table. It was a match in which neither side played particularly well and the Stockport scrum was under pressure for much of the game. Stockport just had the edge in the first half, despite some poor tackling the defence was good enough to keep Sheffield to a 3 point penalty while Bebbington kicked four out of four . An early chance for a score was lost as the referee judged Anderson to have knocked on as he crossed the line after 5 minutes but for the rest of the half there were no try scoring opportunities. One of the Sheffield second rows was yellow carded just before the interval, with the score at 12-3 to the visitors.
Early in the second half the Sheffield wing managed to field a clearance kick just in from touch and set off down the line, beating the Stockport tacklers before passing inside for his supporting player to get the touchdown, the try was converted to narrow the gap to two points. Bebbington converted his 5th penalty to keep Stockport ahead before Sheffield scored a good try, with the blind side wing running an angle that created a gap in the Stockport defence. The try was converted and Sheffield were ahead for the first time at 17-15. The penalty count continued in Stockport’s favour as Bebbington was again on target to secure a one point lead. After Sheffield received their second yellow card a good try for Stockport secured the win. Bebbington put up a good kick ahead, the full back knocked on and Drew secured the loose ball and passed to Cruse, who beat the tacklers with a good run towards the line, the ball was recycled at the ruck near the line and moved left for Newton to score, the conversion was again on target and the win secured at 25-17.
