James Drew scores try to secure 4 points

Stockport travelled to Checkheaton near Leeds for their latest fixture. They just managed to break the stalemate in the game before the final whistle in order to maintain their title challenge.

Things had got off to a really positive start and Stockport enjoyed 80 % of possession and territory in the first quarter of the game. However they were making hard work of converting this dominance into points and had to settle in the first half for a couple of Matt Bebbington penalties.

The home side slowly gathered confidence and had several penalty attempts of their own but only managed to land one of them. The score at half time rested at 3-6 to the visitors.

The second half continued much in the same vein but with Stockport wing Greg Newton going close twice before having to withdraw with a knee injury. Cleckheaton then leveled the game 13 minutes into the second half with a further penalty.

The stalemate ground on into the closing stages and Stockport then made some positional changes. Steve Pearson was given the chance to put Stockport in front with a further penalty. His attempt struck the right hand post and had it not been for a slight knock on whilst trying to gather the loose ball it would have brought Stockport a try.

Stockport also brought on the large frame of 6ft 8in James Drew onto the left wing. With about seven minutes remaining Drew latched onto an inviting pass without breaking stride 15 metres from the Cleckheaton and his pace and determination saw him over the line in the corner much to the relief of the travelling Stockport faithful.

This Saturday Stockport play host to Darlington Mowden Park at home and the kick off is at 2.15pm
