Some weak tackling in the midfield allowed the Sheffield backs and the full back in particular to make dangerous attacking runs, creating tries from moves started in their own half. Sheffield scored 6 converted tries to two tries and one conversion by Stockport.
The first quarter looked promising and Stockport, playing with the wind and the slope had control of most of the possession when Sheffield scored a try with a telling midfield break. Stockport replied quickly with a try for Nick Smith with a good drive from a lineout, following a penalty to touch. The hosts’ No. 15 then sold a dummy on half way and was able to run in under the posts with the Stockport defence beaten. A good period of pressure by Stockport resulted in a Sheffield forward sent to the sin bin for pulling down a maul. Stockport kept up the attack and when another penalty was awarded Richard Geary took a tap and ran in for a try as the Sheffield players were focussed on one of their forwards being treated for injury. With the half drawing to a close 12-14 looked good for Stockport but a poor clearance kick allowed Sheffield to attack from deep again and weak tackling conceded another try to give the home side a 21-12 lead at half time.
Apart from two excellent runs by wing Elliot Fletcher and Keiran Hibbs charging down a clearance and just failing to get the touchdown, Stockport had little to offer in the second half apart from some spirited play by the forwards. Sheffield dominated and added 3 more converted tries, while Stockport were unable to add to their tally.
