Stockport travelled to Leicester Lions on Saturday anxious to continue their improvement in performances and results that have been seen in recent weeks

To bolster confidence if was good to see three regular 1st XV players back in action after long lay-offs. Full back Steve Pearson, centre Greg Newton and prop Jan-Erick Anderson have all been absent since the early weeks of the season. Added to them Stockport also had the services on the bench of Danny Carlton, the former Manchester Captain, who has recently returned from Italy.
The home side nearly caught Stockport cold in the opening moments of the game and only a final misdirected pass stopped Leicester from taking an early lead.
Stockport then settled down and enjoyed a good share of possession and territory. Steve Pearson re-opened his kicking account with a 7th minute penalty. We also saw a galloping run by second row Mike Waddington. The man who was really making a nuisance of himself was fly half Alex Zavalis-Roebuck who nipped through gaps in the Lions defence throughout the game. Then in the 20th minute he switched tactics and chipped over the defensive line instead and the ball fell perfectly for wing Myles Hall to run through and touchdown. 0-8.
Although there was no more score before half time, Stockport remained the team most likely but after surrendering a 12 point lead the previous week they were rightly on their guard.
With 5 minutes of the restart the game was turned on its head. Stockport centre Jamie Anthony received a yellow card and although Leicester squandered the 3 points from the ensuing penalty within a minute they had a converted try to show for their numbers advantage. 7-8.
Steve Pearson managed to increase the lead again with a penalty 4 minutes later for an offence the visiting support thought as worthy of a period in the sin bin as Anthony’s earlier crime. 7-11. Leicester took full advantage of his absence as their wing ran in another converted try before his return. 14-11.
This was classic scenario for Stockport to find themselves in this season and the remaining 20 minutes would be a true demonstration of the progress they had made in fitness, confidence and game plan execution.
It was an impressive 20 minutes in anyone’s book. 67th minute - Try - Steve Hill from a catch and drive maul from a line out. 74th minute - Try - Mike Kaciubskyj from a well worked backs move and a well timed final pass. 14-21
Then we came down to the last play of the game. A break away try by Leicester could have undone all the hard work of getting 4 points for the win. Suddenly Stockport turned the ball over Mike Waddington made a dash to the line but was brought down but Steve Hill was there to pick up and go over under the posts to secure a bonus point. 14-28.
