With young prop James Flynn benching for the Sharks on Friday and in the starting 15 for Stockport on the Saturday could he get a win in both games. In the event it turned out to be yet another case of what might have been for the red white and greens.
The longest away trip of the season took Stockport up to the North East to meet Westoe. The first half was littered with penalties and errors by both sides but after 15 minutes Stockport turned down a penalty kick for the posts and went for touch instead. A minute later and considerably closer they were presented with another chance but the kick went wide.
Stockport then lost centre Sam James for 10 minutes when he was sin-binned and during his absence Westoe made two rare attacks on the Stockport line and came away with converted tries through their forwards.
Just before half time it was Westoe’s turn to lose a player on a yellow card and Stockport at least got themselves on the score board with a penalty before the break. 14-3. Two minutes into the second half, 2nd row Mark Waddington crashed over from close range and with the conversion the deficit was down to 14-10. As the returning Westoe sin-bin player came onto back on he was replaced by yet another yellow card recipient from the home side.
In the second half in which Stockport enjoyed 80% of both the possession and territory and it took the It took Westoe 18 minutes to even get out of their half. Stockport went in front after 23 minutes with a well taken try by Sam James as he dived into the left corner. 14-15.
Stockport continued to dominate and with 5 minutes remaining they elected to increase their lead through a further penalty rather than remain camped under the Westoe posts. 14-18. Westoe then took full advantage of having the pressure taken off them and suddenly Stockport found themselves back on their own line and failed to deal with Westoe’s determined attack on it. 19-18.
There was still time for one more chance to take the win as Westoe infringed at the restart and Richard Geary had a 30 plus metre attempt to snatch the game. It wasn’t to be and Stockport made the 150 mile return journey with only a losing bonus point to show for their efforts.
