Stockport had the majority of possession but a penalty on 74 minutes gave Sheffield a two point lead, leaving a disappointed Stockport team with only a bonus point.
Despite losing fullback Mike Barlow after 20 minutes, Stockport made a positive start and after good recycling a strong run by No 8 Dan Eccles looked to have set up a try scoring chance but his pass went to a Sheffield player, who was penalised for holding on and Alex Zavallis-Roebuck put Stockport ahead with the penalty. Sheffield struck back straight away after a poor clearance kick by Stockport allowed Sheffield to score wide out on the right, with the Stockport defence outflanked. The conversion put Sheffield ahead at 3-7 on 29 minutes. More great passing by Stockport allowed Nick Smith to run into the 22 and Jack Wilson was tackled just short of the line but a penalty for offside allowed Stockport to convert another penalty for 6-7. Sheffield replied with another penalty before Stockport scored a try with Jamie Anthony being driven over after a period of good continuity, there was no conversion but Stockport were ahead 11-10 at half time.
Early in the second half fly half Zavallis-Roebuck hacked on a loose ball on half way and managing to pick up the ball in the Sheffield 22 he created the chance for the ball to get to Jack Wilson for a score near the posts. The conversion was added and Stockport led 18-10 after 48 minutes. Sheffield’s strong running centre created a try for the visitors as he broke the defensive tackles and with the conversion Sheffield were back within a point. With both sides having chances spoiled by penalties or handling errors it looked as if Stockport would hang on but a penalty in the last few minutes gave Sheffield the victory and a consolation bonus point to Stockport.
