However despite the 65-24 score line Stockport played some good attacking rugby at times and scored 3 very good tries in the second half and were only a knock on away from securing a try bonus point. Every Stockport player put in a huge amount of work but of note were Mike Barlow at fullback and substitute centre Jack Wilson, who both made good attacking runs, stand in fly half Richard Geary, and wing Tom Oben who scored two of Stockport’s tries. In the forwards Mike Waddington and props James Flynn and James Watson all contributed with powerful running.
There was an early exchange of penalties before Stourbridge scored the first of their 9 tries after 15 minutes. Stockport defended well and made some good runs to stay in the game but when Nic Smith got a yellow card on 35 minutes for an offence, as Stockport were defending their line, Stourbridge took full advantage, scoring two converted tries before the half ended at 22-3 to Stourbridge.
Stockport made a very promising start to the second half winning a lineout following a penalty, a good run by fullback Mike Barlow and a drive by the forwards allowed the ball to be moved left and Tom Oben came into the line to beat the defence for a try. Geary converted. Stourbridge scored 3 more tries before Oben was again on the score sheet. Good driving and running by the forwards in midfield sent the ball to the right and skipper Nic Smith timed his pass well to set Barlow off on a run, creating space for Oben to run in to score, Geary was again on target. Stourbridge scored three more tries in quick succession with their powerful running and real pace too much for Stockport to handle. Stockport nearly got a try as Wilson, Jamie Anthony and Barlow set up a chance for Oben to get his third but the pass was knocked on. Stockport had the final word with a good try by Geary after a lineout and drive and quick ball for Geary to beat the defence, he added the conversion for a final score of 65-24.
