However with some substitutions, partly due to injury and partly tactical Stockport won the second half 26-10 but it was not enough to gain victory with the final score 35-29 to Caldy. However as Coach Tim Burgon said the two bonus points could be like gold dust at the end of the season.
Caldy started positively with their backs looking dangerous and with a penalty and a converted try within the first 15 minutes it was clear Stockport were in for a tough afternoon. It was not made easier as prop Jan Anderson had to go off with a leg injury on 19 minutes but Ian Kennedy proved an able replacement. Stockport got on the board with a Mark Edwards penalty before Caldy added one of their own. After good continuity Caldy scored with an overlap on the right to make it 20-3. Just before half time a sustained Caldy attack finished with their prop crashing over to make it 25-3 at the break.
Stockport started the second half with a great break by substitute fly half Alex Zavalis-Roebuck from half way, he was supported by flanker Kieran Hibbs who got the try. Zavalis-Roebuck converted. Caldy responded immediately with another try for their No 3 driving over from a ruck. The conversion made it 32-10 but Stockport were really into their stride and spent most of the rest of the half in Caldy territory. Greg Newton scored a try after good running by Zavalis-Roebuck, who added the conversion, following good work by the pack. Sam Warburton came on at scrum half and put in some telling high kicks, causing some chaos in the Caldy defence and from a line out in the 22 Stockport drove over with Nic Smith getting the try . Caldy added a penalty before Stockport had the last word with Jamie Anthony getting an interception and running in for a bonus point try, which Zavalis-Roebuck converted for the losing bonus point.
Next week is a home game against Otley.
