Stockport forward power and Warrington pace results in close game but late Warrington scores give away side victory

For the third time this season Stockport suffered defeat from a last minute score by their opposition. Stockport scored early but visitors Warrington replied immediately and as expected continued to play a very fast paced game, which had Stockport under pressure for much of the game. However Stockport dominated the set scrums, taking 3 against the head, the line out also worked well but it was the pace of the Warrington play along with some good fortune that ended up taking the game from Stockport. With the score at 14-12 at half time it was clear it was going to be a close game, Warrington moved ahead early in the second half before a third Stockport try took the home side back into the lead. The lead changed several times until with 5 minutes to go the Stockport forwards used their superiority to score near the posts to secure a try bonus point and the lead at 28-26. Minutes later Warrington converted a penalty before an injury time kick ahead by the Warrington scrum half was chased down by their centre and the converted try robbed Stockport of a losing bonus point. Stockport are now at 5th place in the table with a potentially difficult game away against Northwich next week.
Warrington knocked on at the kick off, which gave Stockport the chance of some early pressure and from a 5 metre scrum scrum half Dudley Southern went blind to score, he converted his own try. Warrington replied with some good phases from the kick off and a short offload pass gave the wing and then the fullback a try wide on the left, there was no conversion for 7-5. Warrington looked dangerous with their pace but it was Stockport who scored next on 21 minutes, good pressure by the Stockport forwards allowed Richard Sackville-West to kick ahead and wing Matt King got the touch down, Southern converted for 14-5. Warrington again replied immediately, when another short pass created space in the centre on half way, a long pass to the right wing went to ground and the ball was hacked on, the bounce evaded the Stockport defenders and the Warrington fly-half following up got the try and the conversion made it 14-12 . Stockport defended well to take the narrow lead into the interval.
Warrington started the second half strongly and after 8 minutes and several good phases the Stockport defence ran out of numbers and the right wing scored wide out, the conversion took the visitors ahead 14-19. Less than 10 minutes later good runs by Sackville-West, Simon Green and Southern created a position and it was prop Matt Lawrowitz who was driven over for the try after a forward drive led by Dean Schofield. Tom Eaton converted and Stockport were back in the lead. Stockport were on the attack again when the ball went loose and Warrington got a boot to it and their left wing won the chase to score a converted try to make it 21-26, with 15 minutes to go. A charge down and run by skipper Keiran Hibbs allowed the Stockport forwards to start a series of drives towards the Warrington line and it was Hibbs who got the try, Southern was again on target and with the try bonus point Stockport were on for a 5 point win with 5 minutes to go. But a penalty gave the visitors a 1 point lead as the game went into stoppage time and that clearance kick by the Warrington scrum half resulted in the try that denied even the losing bonus point.
