Stockport’s journey to Otley gave them two bonus points but not the win they wanted. The game was an exciting 59 points feast, exciting for the impartial spectator but agonising for two sets of supporters.
As the score suggests it was a meeting of two teams who were far more comfortable on attack than in defence. It was the home side who dominated the first 10 minutes and Stockport were allowed very little of the ball. Otley were rewarded by a converted try after 9 minutes. Stockport then started to see some ball and levelled the score six minutes later with the ball being worked up the left touchline and a combination of quick hands and pace saw wing Myles Hall in at the corner. Josh Longmore added a long range conversion. Stockport failed to contest the restart and having seized possession Otley quickly converted it more points with another try. The score board operator was destined to be a busy man all afternoon and Josh Longmore narrowed the deficit to 12-10 with a 17th minute penalty. We then had a surprising lull in the action with the two sides getting into a midfield battle for the upper hand and it was Otley who broke the truce when then took advantage of some weak tackling and their centre scored near the posts. 19-10. There was still time for Stockport to bounce back before the interval and their next attack saw prop Jan-Erik Anderson forge over from close range for a try. Josh Longmore’s boot gave us a half time score of 19-17. Straight from the restart Stockport were immediately under pressure having dropped the ball at the kick off and it was only relieved by an Otley penalty. 22-17. The game settled down again and the equilibrium was broken when a loose Stockport pass went to ground and an Otley boot hacked it forwards. A favourable bounce for the Otley chaser brought them an easy converted try. 29-17. It looked a long way back for the visitors but Stockport rallied with a Dan Eccles try with 10 minutes to go and with Otley down to 14 men it seemed possible that they might snatch a draw. That was until they conceded a penalty which was converted and brought the score to 32-22 and it seemed that the losing bonus point had slipped away as well. Full credit to the Stockport for keeping up their effort and a penalty followed by a catch and drive allowed Nick Smith to touch down for a final score of 32-27.
