The earlier play went to Bromsgrove who prevented Stockport from hardly having a touch of the ball before scoring in the 4th minute from a catch and drive from a lineout. It was a very blustery day in the Midlands and the try was unconverted.
Stockport then enjoyed their best period of play of the game. They kept possession better and made some inroads into the Bromsgrove 22. In the 12th minute it was Stockport’s turn to catch and drive from near to the opposition line and the defenders seemed to lose track that it was Paul Ralph who had the ball in his possession and he barged his way through to cross the line from close range. In the conditions Josh Longmore’s conversion was very well taken. 5-7
As has been their down fall in a lot of fixtures this season Stockport were starting to rack up a sizeable penalty count which kept them on the back foot. The defence was good at this stage and Bromsgrove were kept at bay. In the 33rd minute Josh Longmore stepped up to add a long range wind assisted penalty. 5-10.
There was every reason for the Stockport supporters to believe that they had a good chance of continuing to keep their noses in front in the second half but some unforced errors put the visitors under pressure and it was the Bromsgrove forwards who did the damage as they drove over in the 56th minute. 10-10.
Things finally fell apart for Stockport in the last 10 minutes. First a penalty kick was added to Bromsgrove’s total and then as the referee indicated yet another penalty advantage the Bromsgrove full back sent a long range drop goal attempt through the uprights. Trailing 16-10 Stockport came back strongly but a flat pass by josh Longmore was intercepted on the half way line and ball was touched down under the posts. With the conversion the final margin of 23-10 flattered the home side.
