Stockport make a bright start and finish well but the filling was somewhat lacking

Stockport made the journey over the Pennines last Saturday to take on Hull RUFC. They made a really well structured and go forward start to the game. For the opening five minutes they retained the ball and pressured the home side’s try line. This brought a penalty which full back Josh Longmore dispatched. 0-3.
Everything bode well for further Stockport dominance but the opening minutes seemed only to wake Hull up and for the next 30 minutes the visitors had a pretty torrid time. The first thing was that their lead which had been 5 minutes in the making was wiped out within a minute of the restart as they conceded a soft penalty. 3-3.
It was 13 minutes gone when Hull executed the first of nearly identical pair of tries. Both came from ball produced on the left hand side. As the ball was passed left to right their outside centre came on a thundering well angled run and went under the posts. 10-3.
For anyone who missed that try they got an action replay after 20 minutes with the same result and conversion. 17-3. Credit has to go to Stockport as they steadied the ship and competed on equal terms with the biggest pack they had they had faced this season.
In the 36th minute Stockport scored a well deserved try. They had had a period of pressure and kicked a penalty to the corner. They drove to the line and for a moment it looked as it Nick Smith had been stopped short but he was not held and launched himself a further metre and onto the line. Josh Longmore added the conversion 17-10 and a good Stockport performance after the break would hopefully bring some league points.
It wasn’t to be. It was disappointing half not just for both sides but for rugby in general. There were a lot of unforced errors and by 12 minutes into the half there had only been an exchange of penalties 20-10 and game was ebbing backwards and forwards. With 5 minutes remaining Stockport conceded yet another penalty and with it lost their grasp on a losing bonus point. 23-13
Then with the last play of the game suddenly Stockport burst into life, retained the ball and forged forwards and over the Hull line. Unfortunately the ball was held up and the referee blew for the end of the game. 23-13
