League Points were always the priority over any thoughts of revenge for our play off defeat in 2010, but Stockport saved some of their best rugby of the season for the rematch.

In April 2010 Luctonians came to Headlands Road Bramhall for a play-off game with Stockport to decide promotion to the league they are now both in. The 10-18 defeat game Stockport another year to work on promotion.
Saturday saw one of the best performances of Stockport’s season and thanks in no small part to referee Paul Kimber it was also an exciting spectacle. Luctonians started quickly and having kicked off they fielded a clearance kick. 11 phases of play later they nearly opened the scoring but the final pass was judged to have been forwards.
Stockport then strung 7 phases of play together themselves. Fly half Alex Zavallis-Roebuck fed Captain Dave Marwick who broke the line and then off loaded to centre Mike Bayssat for him to score. The conversion was added by Josh Longmore. 7-0.

8 minutes had already passed and the referee had only stopped play five times. Luctonians responded quickly and went to their forwards for their first try 5 minutes later with 2nd row Alex Davidson burrowing over from close range. The conversion was added 7-7.
It was then Stockport turn to attack and they returned with three points from a Josh Longmore penalty 10-7. The visitors who then pressed forwards and in a carbon copy of his first try, Alex Davidson added another half metre to his try scoring distance and with the conversion his side were ahead 10-14 with 10 minutes still to go before half time. During this time it was a tight midfield battle but Stockport’s Josh Longmore took the chance to narrow the deficit to 13-14 just before the break with a penalty goal.
The second half belonged to Stockport with their 17 unanswered points. 8 minutes into the half centre Mike Bayssat made a clean line break which lead to Greg Newton sliding over for a try. 18-14.
Four minutes and only one blast of the referees whistle later Stockport were further ahead with a Josh Longmore penalty. 21-14. incredibly from the restart the next time he blew was to signal a Stockport try. Josh Longmore came into the line and broke through. He was tackled but received a loud call on his inside from wing Scott Redfern who managed to scoop up his very low pass before scampering 40 metres to score under the posts. Josh Longmore got back to his feet to add the conversion. 28-14. From the restart Stockport again scored without the referee’s intervention. This time it was a 35 metre drop goal from Alex Zavalis-Roebuck. 31-14.

The last 20 minutes were a strange anti-climax. Stockport never got the grips with their quest for a bonus point try and the visitors looked shell shocked after the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Stockport’s man of the match was Jordan Pearson who had worked tirelessly at No.8.
