Stockport continued their run of improved performances belying their position at the bottom of the table. Following early pressure by Lymm Stockport put in some excellent work by the forwards and the best effort by the backs this season. Down by 12-7 at half time Stockport got back to just 3 points behind at 17-14, with hopes of a bonus point, before Lymm scored two late tries to make it 29-14 at the close.
Lymm started well and it was only a try saving tackle by No 8 Simon Green that prevented them getting an early score. There was more good defence before Stockport won two penalties to get a line out on the Lymm 5m line, a well controlled drive took them over the line for lock Matt Lawrowtsich to score, Scott Redfern converted to give Stockport the lead. Stockport continued to play well but a penalty on half way gave the home side a line out and from the 3rd phase the Lymm scrum half dummied to go under the post for a score. A very good break by Redfern and a backs move created an opportunity for Stockport full back Toby Gaskell but the Lymm defence just managed to get him into touch a metre short. An even contest made for good viewing for the spectators, Lymm scored again after several phases eventually overcame the positive Stockport defence, but with no conversion the home side just had a 5 point lead. There was confusion as the Stockport players put the ball into touch thinking the half was over but the referee gave Lymm a line out and Stockport produced more good defence to keep the score to 12-7.
Stockport started the second half well but a Redfern kick was charged down and Stockport gave away a penalty in their 22 as they tried to recover the situation. Lymm went for the scrum and they went blind with the wing getting a scoring pass from the scrum half. Again there was no conversion and Lymm were 17-7 up. Good scrummaging by Stockport won a penalty on half way, a series of good phases resulted in a scrum 5 to Stockport and a free kick was won, Scrum half Dudley Southern tapped and after Jordan Pearson took the ball to the line and it was young prop Will Hirstwood who got the try. Redfern converted from the touch line to bring Stockport within 3 points. Lymm scored two tries to go into a 29-14 before Stockport finished strongly, just being held up over the line before a good scrum 5 metres out almost gave Southern a try in the corner just before the final whistle went.
Next week is a home game against Ilkley, who are just below Lymm in the table.
