Despite a great second half effort Stockport were unable to overcome the gulf between top and bottom of table.
Having been 43-0 down at half time Stockport had the determination not to give up that we have come to expect during this difficult season. It was Stockport who dominated the final quarter, camping in the home 22 with an excellent forward effort and a try from Scott Redfern as he charged down a clearing kick to score and convert. With 3rd placed Hull getting a last minute try to make the final score 76-7 they confirmed their superiority. Hull had very good backs, with the full back continually coming into the line and running freely through the Stockport defence and big physical forwards this was always going to be a tough game for Stockport. Given the half time score a much bigger defeat was on the cards and great credit goes to all the Stockport players for their commitment right to the end.
Stockport suffered a number of injuries with key forwards Simon Metcalfe and Paul Ralph having to leave the field but the substitutes stepped up and contributed to the final quarter effort. Simon Green in the centre put in some good strong running and full back Alex Wilson made several good tackles, preventing what would have been certain tries. But this was a whole team effort and the side are looking forward to being very competitive at home against Waterloo on 4 March in search of their first win.
