A rare league win at BHP and five tries as well....

Stockport RUFC v Birkenhead Park, National 3 North, Saturday 9 April 2011.
Stockport completed a rare away victory against Birkenhead Park, with a convincing 5 try win against a good Birkenhead side. With excellent conditions both sides played good open rugby to provide an entertaining game. Stockport scored early to give them a lead they never relinquished despite some good tries by the home side.
There was a good start from Stockport with good running, handling and recycling resulting in a run by centre Phil Leigh but he was stopped short of the line and it looked like the chance was gone but the ball was recycled and a drive following a scrum gave prop Craig Anthony a try on 6 minutes, Jonny Edwards converted. Birkenhead won a penalty, which missed and then failed with a drive from a lineout but kept up the pressure, however it was Stockport who scored when Marwick hacked on a loose ball and Leigh demonstrated good skills to kick the ball on twice to beat the defence and get the touchdown, Edwards converted to make it 14-0 and followed with a penalty 6 minutes later. Birkenhead then had the better of the territorial advantage and scored a penalty just before the break.
The home side scored a good try as the ball was recycled and a runner from deep broke the Stockport defensive line and got away a pass to provide a score, which was converted. The response was quick as Edwards made a break in the home 22 and beat the defence to score a try and provided the conversion to make it 24-10. Birkenhead then attacked and from a lineout moved the ball and kept recycling until the Stockport defence was committed and the space was created for a converted try (24-17). Birkenhead continued to apply the pressure but a good tackle knocked the ball loose and hooker Tom Cruse hacked on and collected the ball to run into the home half and pass inside to Craig Cooper, who was supported by flanker Nick Smith, he scored under the posts; Edwards again provided the 2 points. Skipper Dave Marwick completed the scoring with a low pick up and run in to score a try, which Edwards converted for a final score of 38-17.
