Fortunate that Port's President Julie Fuller had taken advantage of a BOGOF offer when she bought the champagne for last week's premature celebrations

Stockport completed another win to confirm themselves as League Champions despite a 5 point penalty awarded earlier in the week for a clerical error in completing a match card. However it was not a Championship performance against a very determined Beverley side but it is the characteristic of this team that they just do not want to lose and an individual try by substitute Phil Leigh, converted by Matt Bebbingon sealed a 22-17 victory.
There was a very positive start by Stockport, with some good handling and recycling bringing them close to scoring on couple of occasions in the first 10 minutes, an excellent break by Jonny Edwards put him in the clear but beyond any support and Beverley cleared with a penalty as he held on after the tackle. Beverley then scored two penalties to go 6 points up. Despite their scrum being under pressure Beverley survived a period of pressure thanks to good work by their No 8. Stockport went for a try rather than 3 points with a penalty in front of the posts and eventually Tom Cruse twisted over for a try from a scrum and drive on 37 minutes, Edwards converted. A penalty by Edwards put Stockport 10-6 up at half time.
Early pressure in the second half resulted in a yellow card for Cruse for a spear tackle and Beverley converted to get within a point. Beverley were on the attack and looking dangerous when fullback George Cook collected a loose ball and ran 60metres to score, there was no conversion. Beverley kicked another penalty to bring it back to 15-12 and then looked like scoring but a tackle by Dave Marwick prevented the try, Beverley pressure resulted in another penalty, which bounced back off the post and the chasing wing collected the ball to score, there was no conversion but the visitors were in the lead at 15-17. Substitute at fly half Phil Leigh took a return pass from Jamie Anthony and ran well before chipping over the fullback and winning the race to touch down, with Bebbington’s conversion the victory was secured at 22-17.
Next week there is the traditionally hard away fixture at Birkenhead Park.
