Stockport travelled to Waterloo, having not played for three weeks due to the weather. In what proved to be a hard fought match Stockport came from a point behind to clinch victory with a try in the last 5 minutes. Despite scoring a converted try in the first five minutes Stockport found the home pack determined and hard to restrain. There were also signs of the lack of games with many errors by both sides, which prevented any real continuity. There were four yellow cards with 2 from each side spending time in the sin bin.
Steve Pearson scored the first try after the forwards won several phases the ball was moved right along the backs and Pearson came in from fullback to score wide out. Jonny Edwards converted. Waterloo replied with an unconverted try as the forwards drive took them over the line following a lineout 5 metres out. The Waterloo game plan was to use their forwards to drive through the Stockport midfield and the visitors found it hard to contain. Stockport won a penalty and took the option of kicking to touch, from the lineout the ball was moved to the left but the final pass was intercepted and the Waterloo wing ran 80 metres to score under the posts, with a conversion to follow to make it 12-7 to the home team. Another penalty gave Stockport a lineout position and Paul Ralph got the touch down from the drive. With Edwards off with an injury Steve Pearson converted to retake the lead but Waterloo kicked a penalty to make it 15-14 to the home side at half time.
The second half was largely uneventful, except for a yellow card for each side. Penalties were exchanged to leave Waterloo leading at 18-17 with 15 minutes to go. Stockport at last started to get some continuity and after failing with a couple of difficult penalty attempts Stockport had a lineout 10 metres out the forwards took play up to the line and Matt Bebbington passed to No 8 Ben Davey, who slipped a good pass to wing Mike Pearson to score with five minutes to go. There was no conversion and Stockport held off the home side’s efforts to regain the lead.
