Stockport slipped into second place in the league despite a win away at Darlington Mowden Park. It was a game, which Stockport mostly dominated but established very few scoring opportunities. There was a spate of penalties awarded by the referee and two Stockport players and one from Darlington spent time in the sin bin. However during some spells of sustained Darlington pressure the Stockport defence held firm, conceding only two penalties. Stockport scored the only try of the game and also a penalty to win by 8-6.
The only score in the first 20 minutes was a penalty to Stockport converted by Jonny Edwards. Highlights of the first half included an impressive break from young Stockport scrum half Rory Bell and a strong run from Number 8 Ben Davey, which set up a position from which the ball was moved to the right for wing Greg Newton to score, Edwards’s conversion was only inches wide.
The second half started with another good run by Ben Davey into the home 22 but the ball was not well used and the position was lost and Darlington spent time in the Stockport half, eventually winning a penalty for offside, which they converted. Later in the half Stockport conceded another penalty as a tackler failed to roll away and Darlington added another 3 points. With 10 minutes to go Davey was yellow carded when the referee believed he had been held and not released the ball. Stockport held out for the win despite some real pressure from Darlington.
This was an important win and victory in games like this will be essential if the league is to be won. But with Chester gaining a bonus point Stockport slip to second on points difference.
