Stockport played some excellent rugby in the first half of this game against top of the table Hull at Headlands Road. Despite Hull getting the first score, a try from a quick free kick after the Hull pack convinced the referee that Stockport had pushed before the ball went into a scrum, Stockport played most of the first period in the visitors half of the field. The recycling and handling in the backs was as good as any game this season and was rewarded with an excellent try by Craig Cooper as he took a short pass from Rees following a lineout, Cooper beat the defensive tackles to score under the posts, bizarrely the conversion kick was charged down by the Hull players. However the game turned in the two minutes before half time Stockport were leading 8-7 when Hull were given a scrum 5 metres out from the Stockport line, even though it was clear that a Hull player had kicked the ball across the try line before it was touched down by Stockport. The conversion was the last action of the half and Stockport 8-14 down after a half they had dominated entirely.
The second half started with Hull on the attack and a good try by their centre was converted and two minutes later Hull latched onto a Stockport knock on at half way and despite a good covering effort by Newton the ball was passed to the Hull wing who scored under the post. So in the 6 minutes either side of half time the game turned completely in Hull’s favour with the score at 28-8. Despite not showing any dominance at scrum or lineout Hull proved very good at latching onto loose ball and were excellent at supporting runners as Stockport tried desperately to get back in the game – Hull went onto score another four tries to run out 52 -8 winners demonstrating why they head the division.
