Stockport win by the narrowest of margins.....again...

A last minute penalty miss from the half way line by the home side meant Stockport came away with a second less than 3 points victory in two weeks. With opponents, West Park having suffered two heavy defeats in their first two games and lacking in confidence Stockport should have capitalised on two early scoring chances. The first after Nick Wroe was stopped 10 metres short on the left and an overlap beckoning as the ball was moved to the right, but the pass was never given and the attack broke down. The second opportunity had Newton breaking through a tackle and heading for the line but from the ruck after he was tackled Stockport gave away a penalty and allowed the hosts to clear. After Stockport had just managed to hold the ball up as the Park forwards drove over the line their scrum half beat the defence and scored on the blind side from a 5 metre scrum and the try was converted. Stockport number 8 Van Schalkwyk made a good break from the back of a scrum on half way and West Park were penalised as they tried to stop the attack on their 22. Steve Pearson converted to make it 3-7. West Park were gaining in confidence all the time and their scrum half began to dominate proceedings, his kick ahead was just touched down by Pearson to prevent another try. The last ten minutes of the first half were littered with mistakes and penalties, mostly in favour of West Park but the half time score remained 7-3 to the home team.

Stockport started the second half well but lost second row Graham Chenoweth with an injury and the loss of bulk resulted in Stockport coming under pressure in the scrum. A number of Stockport attacks broke down through handling errors and hooker Fuller was helped off with a knee injury, causing further problems for the Stockport scrum. With not enough pressure on the Park half backs the West Park scrum half repeated his first half score with another blind side break at a 5metre scrum and Stockport were further behind at 3-12. Stockport finally converted a scoring chance when Dalton came in from the wing to take a quick ball from a lineout, creating space for full back Newton to score near the posts. Pearson converted to get Stockport within 2 points at 10-12. There was then a period of very positive play from Stockport with forwards and backs linking well and managing to sustain some accurate handling. West Park gave away a penalty for killing the ball at a ruck and Pearson converted the chance to put Stockport ahead for the first time 13-12.

West Park then put on some real pressure but Stockport held out and finished the stronger of the two teams, just missing a scoring chance after a strong run by Pearson. However it was a nervy last ten minutes and there was great relief as the Park kicker failed to convert the last second penalty chance from the half way line.

The first team victory completed a clean sweep for Stockport with 5 teams all winning. The seconds beat Liverpool St Helens seconds 25-8, the thirds beating Glossop seconds 21-17, the 4th team beat Burnage 4ths 36-26 and the Vets beat Chester Vets 52-20. It is many years since the club enjoyed such a successful Saturday and with both Colts sides winning their games on Sunday Club President Brian Whalley had every right to like the cat hat got the cream. Next week the first team are at home against Westoe kicking off at 3.0pm
