This was a good performance as Stockport ran in 9 tries against Crewe and Nantwich, with the visitors replying with just a converted try. However it was far from a one sided game, the team from the next tier down had some very good backs and in particular their try scoring centre was very quick. Stockport played some exciting rugby, based on the plan Dean Schofield and Tom Eaton have, which clearly includes support runners ready to take and give a pass, the continuity and quality of passing indicated the hard work that has been done pre-season. Substantially based on the team from last year the Stockport side benefitted from the addition of centre Rory Austin, who made some excellent breaks, Fly Half Tom Eaton, who managed the game well and kicked 6 conversions and of course Dean Schofield. Simon Green made some good runs into the line from full back underlining his versatility.
First half tries came from Jordan Pearson, Tom Duffy, Gareth Johnson, Tom Eaton converting them all. The defence was generally sound but Crewe and Nantwich did score a very good try through their speedy centre to make it 21-7 at the break.
Rory Austin got he second half off to a good start after good support play to make it 26-7. The visitors then had two good attempts but on both occasions the referee judged them to have knocked on over the line. Stockport them produced an excellent team try after a break on half way by returning wing Richard Sackville-West, good support running and passing gave Tom Eaton a run in for the the try. (33-7) A similar pattern of play gave George Smith a try before Tom Duffy got his second, breaking from a ruck 5 metres out to get over the line. Rory Austin scored a well deserved try before veteran wing Nick Wroe ran in from 30 metres despite some defenders who he out ran. The final conversion by Tom Eaton made the final score 57-7.
