Stockport got their competitive season off to a positive start with a win against Lymm in the first round of the Cheshire Cup on Saturday. In a game restricted by torrential downpours and a thunderstorm, which led to a discussion with team captains about the danger from lightning, Stockport won 16-12, scoring one try to Lymm’s two. Stockport’s fly half Mark Edwards was on target with his kicking converting three penalties and Stockport’s try to seal the victory.
The early exchanges were fairly even and after Lymm missed a penalty attempt Edwards put Stockport ahead after 14 minutes, with a penalty from 40 metres. The rain came down and made handling for both sides a bit of a lottery. Lymm had territorial advantage until a scrum in their 22 when Nic Smith picked up and made ground, Alex Zavalis-Roebuck took a difficult pass off his toes and the ball was moved to Jordan Pearson who powered over, not needing the 3 man overlap. Edwards added the conversion for a 10-0 lead. Despite Lymm being superior in the lineout the half ended without further score.
Edwards added a penalty early in the second half and his kicking from hand kept Lymm on the defensive. A period of pressure by Stockport resulted in another successful penalty for a 16-0 lead. Despite the difficulties for both sides due to the wet, Lymm started to get some domination, while Stockport were giving away a stream of penalties. Lymm had a drive from a lineout to score a converted try and on the stroke of full time Lymm picked up from a scrum and went blind to beat the Stockport defence for their second try which went unconverted.
Next Saturday with a home game against Luctonians.
