v Cleckheaton
Pre-Season
Away
Lost 21-5

For their final pre-season outing Stockport travelled to North 1 side Cleckheaton. The consensus after the game was that the home team had been flattered by the margin of victory of three tries to one. For the main part, Stockport presented a very organised defence and it was a surprise when a single missed tackle gifted Cleckheaton with their first try which was converted after 15 minutes. Stockport then showed some more imaginative play and it was fair reward for the pressure they put the home side under when wing Dan Eccles crashed over for a try that went unconverted. Stockport continued their attacking thrusts and had a try disallowed when their pack drove over. As they neared the try line again a long pass was intercepted by the fleet footed Cleckheaton wing who ran the length of the field to score. 14-5 and that’s how the score remained until the break.

In the second half the two sides tended to cancel each other out which both struggling to reduce the number of turnovers. There was no lack of effort but the only break through came from the home side who score with a neat move down the wing which still relied on a rare defensive aberration from the visitors. 21-5.

The worry of these fixtures is that the players pick up injuries so close to the start of the league season. Stockport returned home with a number of bumps and bruises but confident that they will field a first choice team for the visit of Leigh this Saturday, Kick Off 3.0pm

Pre-Season

Draw 10-10

With two weeks until the start of the new season, Stockport RUFC’s head coach Tim Burgon, took 21 players to Stoke for a pre-season game against Midlands 1, Longton.

This represented only half of Stockport’s 1st team squad but they showed enough in the first and last quarters of the game to show that they will mount a significant challenge in North 2 West this season. Stockport scored first and last with tries from veteran scrum half and coach Simon Baker and a well worked move that saw wing Dan Eccles go over in the corner.

There are a number of new faces since last season and it was centre James Dalton and wing Dan Barker who caught the eye. Another ‘new’ face was prop Ian Kennedy who made a return to rugby after a career threatening knee injury two years ago.

This Saturday Tim Burgon will hope to review some more of his new resources when the team travel to Yorkshire for another friendly against
Cleckheaton.
